The county acquired the utility serving the community in March 2018 and allowed properties to connect ([Collier County Public Utilities, 2026](https://www.colliercountyfl.gov/government/public-utilities/water-sewer-district/wastewater-division/about-us)), but Golden Gate Estates residents were never required to ([Collier County, 2026](https://www.colliercountyfl.gov/government/public-utilities/water-sewer-district/engineering-and-project-management/utility-projects)). Where a property is still private, an emergency has a different shape. No water on a municipal supply is usually somebody else's outage and somebody else's repair. No water on a well is a pump, a pressure tank, a pressure switch or a power supply — all of them on your land, all of them yours, and none of them fixed by waiting. The same asymmetry runs the other way. A sewage backup on a municipal connection may be the utility's main. On septic there is no main: it is the tank, the line to it, or the drainfield. Knowing which of the two systems the property is actually on is therefore the first question in an emergency here, not a detail to establish afterwards, because it determines what is even worth checking. Knowing where this is, and that it opens, is the single most useful thing to establish before anything goes wrong. ## What do I check first when the well delivers no water? Power to the pump, before anything else, because the most common reason a well system stops delivering is that the pump is not running rather than that anything has failed mechanically. A tripped breaker or a switch that has cut out accounts for a substantial share of no-water calls on private systems, and it is a check the occupant can complete in a couple of minutes. After that, the pressure tank and the switch that governs it, which are the components that most often fail in a way that presents as no water rather than as poor pressure. None of this requires opening anything. It requires knowing which equipment the property has and where it sits, which is why the recommendation to locate and label it in advance appears throughout this page. Where a property handles its own water and its own waste, a backup may not be a plumbing problem at all. ## How do I get water to the house while it is out? By having decided beforehand, because a property on a private system has no utility to report an outage to and no restoration time to be quoted. There is no queue to join. The system that stopped is on your property and the interval before water returns is the interval it takes to get somebody out and parts to hand. For a household that means a modest stored supply for drinking and sanitation is not an unusual precaution out here — it is a reasonable one, in the same category as knowing where the shutoff is. It costs very little and it converts an urgent problem into an inconvenient one, which is the whole of what preparation buys on a property that owns its own infrastructure.
