# Camera inspection on Marco Island
Marco Island was built across a boundary. A house from the first decade and one from the last have different pipe underneath, and only one of them is visible from a fixture.

## Marco Island was built across the material boundary
Modern Marco Island opened on 31 January 1965 under the Deltona Corporation, and between 1965 and 1975 the company's architect designed 72 distinct model homes for the island ([Coastal Breeze News, 2026](https://www.coastalbreezenews.com/lifestyles/the-florida-house-a-look-back-in-time/article_65decfb6-f46d-11ef-bf56-075f18c62831.html)).
That timeline matters more here than in most neighborhoods, because it crosses a line. Collier County has a very large proportion of homes built before 1972 with cast iron drains underground ([Revolution Florida, 2026](https://www.revolutionflorida.com/blog/cast-iron-plumbing-older-homes)), so the earliest Marco phases sit inside that window — while houses built through the later phases run toward the polybutylene supply era of roughly 1978 to 1995.
The practical consequence is that "what is under a Marco Island house" has no island-wide answer. It depends on the phase, and phase is not something you can read from the street. A camera is what converts that from a guess into a fact before any money is spent on the wrong intervention.
The push-reel that carries the camera down the line. The deliverable from an inspection is the footage and the measured distances, not a verbal summary at the door.

## How do I find out what year my house was actually built?
The county property record is the starting point and it is public, which makes this a question you can answer in a few minutes rather than one that needs a site visit. What that record gives you is a build year, and on an island developed in distinct phases across a decade the build year is the single most useful piece of information you can hold before commissioning anything, because it tells you which side of the material change the property most likely falls on.
It is a strong indicator rather than proof. Properties get remodelled, drains get replaced, and a house can carry an early build year and modern pipe underneath it. That is precisely why the camera exists: the record narrows the question and the inspection settles it. Doing them in that order means you are paying to confirm something specific rather than paying to find out where to start.
Canal frontage, and the water table that comes with it. A large share of the island's housing sits on a canal, which changes what a survey is weighing.

## Does canal frontage change what the inspection is looking for?
It changes the emphasis rather than the method. A property on canal frontage sits close to the water table, and the practical consequence for a drain survey is that groundwater conditions around the run matter more — infiltration at a joint behaves differently, and a defect that would be slow to show inland can present sooner. The camera work is the same; what the operator is weighing while watching it is not.
It also raises the value of knowing the depth and route precisely rather than approximately, because any later excavation on a waterfront lot is a more constrained job than the same work on an inland one. Recording the locate at the time of the inspection costs nothing extra while the equipment is already on site, and it is the difference between a targeted repair and an exploratory one if anything is ever needed.
