# What a repipe actually involves, day by day
Most repipe pages tell you what it costs. Fewer tell you what it is like to live in the house while it happens.

A whole-house repipe replaces the supply pipework feeding every fixture, leaving drains untouched. New lines are routed to each fixture, connections are remade, walls are opened at drop points and made good, and the system is pressure tested and inspected before the old pipe is abandoned in place.

## The material decision, and what it changes
PEX or copper, and it is not only about price.
PEX is flexible, which means fewer joints, faster installation and the ability to route around obstructions rather than through them. Fewer joints matters because joints are where supply systems fail.
Copper is rigid, long-established, and handles heat and UV exposure differently. It requires more fittings and more labor to install, and it is more sensitive to aggressive water chemistry — the pinholing that shows up in some installations is water acting on the metal.
The choice affects the price, and it affects routing options, so it is worth settling before scope is fixed rather than after. Replacement material is one of the variables driving the overall figure ([Angi, 2026](https://www.angi.com/articles/cost-to-replace-polybutylene-pines.htm)).

## Routing decides the disruption
Overhead is the good case. The slab is not.
On a single-story slab home the usual route is overhead through the attic: new lines run above the ceiling and drop down inside walls at each fixture. Openings are confined to drop points, which are patchable.
Routing through or under the slab is a different job. Concrete is opened and made good, working conditions are harder, and the timeline extends. It is the route taken when overhead cannot reach.
A two-story home adds vertical runs and more openings. This is why two houses of identical size can receive very different quotes — the route is doing most of the work in that number.

## The sequence, and the water

The usual pattern is a rough-in phase where new lines are run and left unconnected, then a changeover where fixtures are moved across, then pressure testing and inspection.
The supply is off during working hours on changeover days. On an overhead route it is typically restored each evening; on a slab route the interruption is longer and less predictable.
This is worth agreeing explicitly rather than assuming. "How many days, and will we have water overnight" is a fair question and the answer tells you how the job will be run.

## What gets opened, and what gets put back
The finishing is where quotes diverge most.
Drops are made inside walls, so drywall is opened at each fixture wall. In bathrooms and kitchens that can mean tile, and matching older tile is sometimes not possible at all.
Making good is the most common gap between two quotes for the same job. Restoring painted drywall to paint-ready is a different scope from restoring it finished, and both are different from tile.
Ask specifically what is included and to what standard. A quote that says "patch and repair" without defining the finish level is not yet comparable to one that does.

## How much does repiping a house cost?
Four to fifteen thousand for most single-family homes, and the material matters less than the foundation it runs through.
A whole-home repipe runs $4,000 to $15,000 for most single-family homes, with a national average near $7,500 ([Angi, 2026](https://www.angi.com/articles/cost-to-replace-polybutylene-pines.htm)). The spread is genuinely wide because it is driven by three separate things: the size of the house, the material chosen, and how hard the pipe is to reach.
By fixture the pricing is more intuitive. Repipes scale at roughly $650 to $1,500 per fixture, counting every sink, toilet, tub, shower, washing machine, dishwasher, ice maker, hose bib and water heater ([Home Fix Cost Guide, 2026](https://homefixcostguide.com/cost-to-repipe-a-house/)). Counting your fixtures is the fastest way to sanity-check a quote before you know anything else.
Material sets the floor. PEX runs $0.40 to $2 per linear foot, CPVC $0.50 to $1, and copper $2 to $8 ([Home Fix Cost Guide, 2026](https://homefixcostguide.com/cost-to-repipe-a-house/)). Installed on a 1,500 square foot home that works out to roughly $2,000 to $7,000 in PEX, $2,500 to $8,000 in CPVC and $5,000 to $15,000 or more in copper ([Home Fix Cost Guide, 2026](https://homefixcostguide.com/cost-to-repipe-a-house/)).
Then the local multiplier. Slab foundations push repipe costs 25 to 50 percent higher, because crews cannot run beneath the floor and must reroute lines through attics and walls instead ([Angi, 2026](https://www.angi.com/articles/cost-to-replace-polybutylene-pines.htm)). Slab-on-grade is the standard construction across most of Southwest Florida, so that multiplier is the norm here rather than the exception.
That single factor explains most of the difference between a national average and a Naples quote, and it is the thing most likely to be missing from a comparison made against figures found online.

## What is missing from most repipe quotes?
Three items, and together they can add several thousand to a number that looked complete.
Permits are first and smallest, running $50 to $800 depending on the jurisdiction and scope ([Angi, 2026](https://www.angi.com/articles/cost-to-replace-polybutylene-pines.htm)). A quote that omits the permit is either absorbing it quietly or is not intending the work to be inspected, and it is worth knowing which.
Drywall repair is second and considerably larger, at $300 to $1,500 or more ([Angi, 2026](https://www.angi.com/articles/cost-to-replace-polybutylene-pines.htm)). A repipe on a slab house means opening walls and ceilings to route the new lines, and the plumbing quote frequently ends at the pipe. Whether the contractor closes and finishes those openings, or leaves them for you to arrange, is the single most common surprise in this work.
Water main replacement is third, at $600 to $2,500 where it is needed ([Angi, 2026](https://www.angi.com/articles/cost-to-replace-polybutylene-pines.htm)). It is not always needed, but on a property old enough to justify a repipe the service line is the same age as everything else, and replacing everything inside the house while leaving the oldest section outside it is an odd place to stop.
The way to compare quotes properly is to ask each contractor to price all four elements explicitly — pipe, permit, drywall, main — even where the answer is zero. Two quotes that differ by thousands frequently turn out to be pricing different scopes rather than different labor rates.
It is also worth asking what happens to the old pipe. Abandoning it in place is normal and correct on a slab property; the question is whether the quote accounts for capping and isolating it properly rather than simply leaving it live behind a wall.

## When is a repipe the right answer rather than a repair?
When the failures have become a pattern. One leak is an incident; the third on the same system is a forecast.
The clearest trigger is repetition. A single pinhole leak in an otherwise sound system is a repair. A second on a different run within a year or two is a signal about the system rather than the section, because the pipe has the same age, the same water and the same installation everywhere.
Water quality is the second trigger and it is often what starts the pattern. Discoloured water at multiple fixtures, or a persistent metallic taste on the cold side, points at the interior condition of the supply rather than at any single fitting.
Pressure that has declined across the whole house, rather than at one outlet, is the third. Gradual restriction from internal corrosion or scale affects everything downstream, and by the time it is noticeable it is usually well advanced.
For polybutylene the calculus is different and simpler, because the material itself is the problem rather than its age in isolation, and replacement is generally the recommendation regardless of current symptoms.
The economic test is straightforward once the pattern is established. If a property is absorbing repeated repairs at several hundred to a few thousand each, and the underlying system is going to keep producing them, then continuing to repair is paying for a repipe in instalments without ever owning one. The point at which that becomes true is worth calculating rather than feeling.
The opposite case deserves stating too: a house with sound pipe, good pressure, clean water and one isolated failure does not need a repipe, and anybody proposing one on that evidence should be asked what evidence they are actually working from.

## What actually happens during a repipe, and how long is the house disrupted?
Typically several days rather than weeks, and the disruption is drywall rather than water.
The work starts with a plan for the route, and on a slab house that route runs overhead. New supply lines go through the attic and drop down inside walls to each fixture, because the original path under the slab is not available without breaking concrete. That routing decision is what drives the 25 to 50 percent slab premium ([Angi, 2026](https://www.angi.com/articles/cost-to-replace-polybutylene-pines.htm)) and it also determines where the walls get opened.
Access openings come next. They are cut deliberately at drop points and at manifolds rather than randomly, and a competent crew will make fewer, larger, better-placed openings than an inexperienced one making many small ones. Ask to see where they intend to cut before work starts.
The new system is then installed alongside the old one while the old one is still live. This is the part that surprises people: for most of the job the house still has water, because the changeover happens once the new pipework is in place and pressure tested.
Changeover and pressure testing is the short, water-off portion. Each fixture is transferred, the system is charged and held under pressure, and every joint is checked before anything is closed up. Testing before closing is not negotiable, because a joint that weeps behind new drywall costs the drywall twice.
Then closing up and finishing, which is frequently a different trade and frequently priced separately at $300 to $1,500 or more ([Angi, 2026](https://www.angi.com/articles/cost-to-replace-polybutylene-pines.htm)). This is the phase that determines how long the house feels disrupted, and it is the one most likely to be underestimated when the quote was written.
The old pipe is abandoned in place, capped and isolated. On a slab property that is normal and correct — the alternative is excavating a floor to remove pipe that is no longer carrying anything.

## Does repiping change anything besides the leaks?
Pressure, water quality and insurability, in roughly that order of how quickly you notice.
Pressure is the change households register first, and it is frequently larger than expected. Decades of internal corrosion and scale narrow the effective bore of supply pipe progressively, and because the decline is gradual nobody adapts consciously to it. New pipe at full diameter restores flow that had been lost so slowly it stopped registering as loss.
Water quality changes on the cold side. Discolouration, metallic taste and the sediment that collects in aerators are all products of the pipe rather than the supply, and replacing the pipe removes the source rather than filtering the symptom.
Simultaneous demand is the practical version of both. A shower that drops when a toilet is flushed, or a dishwasher that starves the kitchen tap, are capacity symptoms and they usually resolve with the restriction that caused them.
Insurance is the least visible and sometimes the most consequential. Insurers price water damage risk against known failure-prone materials, and a property with documented polybutylene or ageing galvanised supply can face higher premiums or coverage conditions. A completed repipe with a permit and inspection record is the documentation that changes that conversation.
It is also the moment to solve adjacent problems cheaply. Shutoffs at every fixture, a functioning main valve, a pressure-reducing valve where incoming pressure warrants one, and the connection point for water treatment are all trivial to include while walls are open and expensive to retrofit afterwards.
What repiping does not change is the drainage. Supply and waste are separate systems, and a house with new supply pipe can still have sixty-year-old cast iron underneath it — which is worth establishing before rather than discovering after.
